Quick Start Guide

Initial Setup (5 Minutes)

  1. Configure Your Station Timezone Go to JOAN -> Settings -> General and select your radio station's timezone from the comprehensive list. Choose 12-hour or 24-hour time format.
  2. Add Your First Show Navigate to JOAN -> Schedule Manager, click "Add New Show", enter show details, and upload professional DJ/show images via media library.
  3. Display Your Schedule Use [joan-now] shortcode for current show widget or [joan-schedule] for full weekly schedule. Place widgets in sidebars via Appearance -> Widgets.
  4. Enable Premium Features Configure social sharing in JOAN -> Settings -> Social, set up analytics in Analytics tab, and configure show status management.
  5. Test Your Setup Verify schedule displays correctly on frontend, test social sharing buttons, and check timezone detection and dark mode.
Timezone Independence
Important: JOAN's timezone setting is separate from WordPress site timezone and only affects schedule displays. This allows your radio station timezone to be different from your website's administrative timezone.

  • GDPR Compliant: Fully compliant with European data protection regulations
  • Local Storage: All data stays on your server, no third-party sharing
  • Visitor Control: Respects "Do Not Track" browser settings
  • Admin Exclusion: Option to exclude administrator visits from tracking

Frontend Analytics Widgets New in 2.1.3

Public Visualization of Your Visitor Geography
The Analytics Dashboard now extends to your public pages. Display where your listeners are tuning in from with three shortcodes that share the same data, license gate, and privacy guarantees as the admin dashboard. See the Shortcodes Reference section for full syntax and attributes.
  • Country Mode (default): Each country with visitors gets a marker on the globe or map, sized or colored by visit count
  • City Mode: Add mode="cities" to plot one dot per visiting city at its real coordinates, with pulsing dots showing currently-active visitors
  • Multi-City Tooltips: Hovering any country marker shows up to five top cities from that country
  • Pageviews Display: A configurable header above each widget shows the visit count and date range, controlled by JOAN -> Settings -> Analytics or by the show_pageviews shortcode attribute
  • Graceful Fallback: If a network issue prevents loading city data, the widget automatically falls back to country mode so visitors always see something
Admin Diagnostic Tools
New in 2.1.3: JOAN -> Settings -> Analytics includes two new diagnostic panels to help you verify tracking is working as expected:
  • Recent Visits Panel: Shows the 15 most recent rows from the analytics database, read live and bypassing any cache, so you can confirm tracking is firing and per-visitor deduplication is working correctly
  • Force Refresh and Live Country Data: Purges all analytics caches and returns live database counts for today, this week, and this month. Useful when widgets show stale numbers and you want to verify what is actually in the database.
Manual Data Deletion Warning
The manual "Delete All Data" option permanently removes ALL analytics data. This action cannot be undone and removes all visitor statistics, charts, and reports. Always export your data first if you want to keep historical records.

Analytics Visualization Shortcodes New in 2.1.3

Shared Behavior
All three analytics shortcodes share the same gates and attributes. They require an active Premium license and Analytics tracking to be enabled in JOAN -> Settings -> Analytics. Each accepts the following attributes:
  • mode - countries (default) or cities
  • theme - auto (default), light, or dark
  • active_minutes - 1 to 60, controls which cities count as "active" in city mode (default 10)
  • poll_seconds - 0 to 600, polling interval in seconds, 0 disables polling (default 30)
  • show_pageviews - yes or no, overrides the global Analytics setting

[joan-analytics-globe]

WebGL-rendered 3D globe showing visitor geography. Auto-rotates, drag to pan, mouse-wheel to zoom, with explicit zoom in, zoom out, and reset buttons. Pin labels show the top city per country.
  • Best for desktop and tablet pages where you want a striking visual
  • Requires WebGL-capable browser (every modern browser)
  • Hovering any pin pauses rotation and reveals visit detail
  • Mobile responsive with touch support
Example: [joan-analytics-globe mode="cities" active_minutes="15"]

[joan-analytics-map]

Interactive 2D SVG world map with drag-to-pan and mouse-wheel zoom. Works on any browser without WebGL, making it the safe choice when you need broad device coverage.
  • Best for content pages where compatibility matters
  • Same data and modes as the globe
  • Includes explicit zoom in, zoom out, and reset controls
  • Lower resource usage than the 3D globe
Example: [joan-analytics-map theme="dark"]

[joan-analytics-map-basic]

Static SVG world map rendered entirely on the server with native browser tooltips. The smallest payload of the three and the only one suitable for AMP pages, edge-cached pages, and visitors with JavaScript disabled.
  • Best for AMP pages, RSS-style summary pages, and ultra-fast cached pages
  • No JavaScript required for the country view
  • City mode renders city dots as SVG with always-visible labels
  • Tooltips appear via standard browser tooltip behavior
Example: [joan-analytics-map-basic mode="cities"]

License and Updates New in 2.1.4

How Updates Work

Starting in version 2.1.4, JOAN Premium delivers updates exactly like any other WordPress plugin. New releases appear automatically on your Plugins page and your Dashboard Updates screen. You click Update Now and WordPress installs the new version, preserving every setting, every schedule entry, and every analytics record.
One-Time Manual Update from Older Versions
If you are upgrading from version 2.1.3 or earlier: Older versions of JOAN Premium did not support automatic detection. You will need to install version 2.1.4 manually one time by downloading it from your My Account page and uploading it through Plugins -> Add New -> Upload Plugin. After that, every future release will appear automatically on your Plugins page.

The License Tab

Activating Your License
Go to JOAN -> Settings -> License. Enter the email address you used when you purchased JOAN Premium and the license key from your order confirmation. Click Activate License. You will see a green Status indicator and a panel below showing your license details.
  • Product: The exact JOAN product your license covers
  • License Type: Personal, PRO5, or whichever tier you purchased
  • Expires: Your renewal date, or "lifetime" if you have a lifetime license
  • Sites Used and Allowed Sites: How many activations you have used out of your total
  • Activations Left: Sites you can still activate on this license
  • Last Verified With Server: Shows how recently your license was confirmed with our servers
Refresh License Status Button
After renewing your license, moving sites, or anytime you want to confirm your license is current, click Refresh License Status. This forces an immediate check against the licensing server and updates all the details on screen. Useful when you have just renewed and want to see your updates re-enabled without waiting for the daily background check.
Check for Updates Now Button
The Update Settings section on the License tab has a Check for Updates Now button. Click it and JOAN Premium contacts the licensing server right away to ask if a newer version is available. You will see one of three responses: "You are running the latest version", "Version X.Y.Z is available, visit the Plugins page to update", or a clear error explaining why the check could not complete.

What Happens When Your License Expires

You Keep JOAN Premium Forever
JOAN Premium is yours to keep. When a non-lifetime license expires, JOAN Premium continues to work fully on your site. Every premium feature stays unlocked. Your schedule, analytics, social integration, and broadcast control all keep working exactly as they always did. What changes after expiry:
  • Plugin updates pause. You stop receiving new versions until you renew. Existing features keep working with whatever version you currently have installed.
  • Priority support pauses. Renew to regain direct access to our development team. Community support and documentation remain available to everyone.
  • A renewal notice appears. A polite notice on your JOAN admin pages reminds you to renew, with a Renew License button that takes you straight to your My Account page on our store. The notice also has a Remind Me Later button that hides it for 30 days.
You can verify license status anytime by visiting JOAN -> Settings -> License. A status badge shows green for active, amber for expired, and red for invalid.

Update Settings

Configurable Update Behavior
The Update Settings section of the License tab includes the following controls:
  • Automatic Updates: When enabled, WordPress detects new JOAN Premium releases on its normal schedule. Disable this only if you have a specific reason to want manual control.
  • Update Notifications: When enabled, JOAN admin pages and the Plugins screen show a non-blocking notice when a new version is available, with a link to view the update.
  • Current Version: The version of JOAN Premium installed on your site right now.
  • Latest Version: The version available on our servers, with a colored badge indicating whether you are current or behind.
  • Released: When that latest version was released.
How Often Does JOAN Check?
JOAN Premium runs a daily background check to confirm your license is still active and to detect new releases. This is the standard WordPress plugin update schedule. You can force an immediate check at any time using either the Refresh License Status button or the Check for Updates Now button.

Troubleshooting

Common Issues Checklist:

Analytics-Specific Troubleshooting
  • No visitor data: Verify analytics script loading on frontend
  • Missing country data: Confirm IP geolocation service accessible
  • Dashboard shows no data: Check selected time period matches data range
  • Charts not displaying: Ensure Chart.js library loading properly
  • Database growing too fast: Reduce retention period or use manual deletion
  • Widgets show stale numbers: Use the Force Refresh diagnostic panel in JOAN -> Settings -> Analytics to purge transients and see live database counts (new in 2.1.3)
  • Need to verify tracking is firing: Use the Recent Visits panel in JOAN -> Settings -> Analytics to see the 15 most recent rows in your analytics table (new in 2.1.3)
License and Update Troubleshooting
  • Updates not appearing: Click Check for Updates Now in JOAN -> Settings -> License to force an immediate check and see the actual server response
  • License shows wrong status: Click Refresh License Status to re-verify with the server
  • Just renewed but still showing expired: Click Refresh License Status to pick up the renewal immediately rather than waiting for the daily background check
  • Could not reach the licensing server: Check that your server can make outbound HTTPS connections to gandenterprisesinc.com. The plugin keeps your existing access in place if a network check fails, so nothing is broken, you just need to try again later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I enable website analytics?A: Go to JOAN -> Settings -> Analytics tab, toggle "Enable Analytics Tracking" to start collecting visitor data. Configure data retention periods and privacy settings as needed. Analytics is GDPR-compliant and stores no personal information.
Q: What analytics data is collected?A: JOAN Analytics tracks page views, visitor countries and cities (anonymized), session duration, popular pages, and traffic sources. No personal data, IP addresses, or identifying information is stored.
Q: How do I display visitor geography on my public site?A: Place one of the three analytics shortcodes on any page or post: [joan-analytics-globe] for an interactive 3D globe, [joan-analytics-map] for an interactive 2D map, or [joan-analytics-map-basic] for a static SVG map suitable for AMP and edge-cached pages. See the Shortcodes Reference section for attributes.
Q: What is city mode and when should I use it?A: Add mode="cities" to any analytics shortcode to plot individual cities instead of countries. Currently-active cities appear as softly pulsing dots with always-visible labels at their real coordinates. Use city mode when you want to show real-time visitor activity. Use the default country mode when you want a cleaner overview of where listeners come from over the longer term.
Q: How do I enable social media sharing?A: Go to JOAN -> Settings -> Social tab, check "Enable Social Buttons", select your preferred networks (Facebook, X, WhatsApp, Bluesky), and social share buttons will appear on your On Air Now widgets.
Q: What are show status indicators?A: Professional status management with three levels: Live (green - currently broadcasting), Suspended (yellow - temporarily off-air), and Hiatus (red - extended break). Change status from dropdowns in Schedule Manager.
Q: How do I create recurring shows?A: Use the "Create Recurring Show" section in Schedule Manager. Enter show details, select multiple days, use weekday/weekend helpers, and click "Create Recurring". The system prevents scheduling conflicts automatically.
Q: Can I bulk edit multiple shows?A: Yes, make changes to multiple shows in Schedule Manager and click "Save All Changes" to apply all modifications simultaneously.
Q: Is analytics data exported with my schedule?A: No, analytics data is separate from schedule data. Use the CSV export feature in JOAN -> Settings -> Analytics to download visitor statistics separately.
Q: How do I update JOAN Premium?A: Starting with version 2.1.4, JOAN Premium updates appear automatically on your Plugins page and Dashboard Updates screen, just like any other WordPress plugin. Click Update Now and WordPress installs the new version. If you are currently on an older version, install 2.1.4 manually one time by downloading from your My Account page and uploading through Plugins -> Add New -> Upload Plugin. After that, automatic updates work going forward.
Q: What happens if my license expires?A: JOAN Premium continues to work fully on your site. Every premium feature stays unlocked. You can keep using the version you have for as long as you want. What stops is plugin updates and priority support until you renew your license through your My Account page. You never lose access to features you have already paid for.
Q: How do I renew my license?A: Visit your My Account page at gandenterprisesinc.com and renew through the standard checkout process. Once renewed, return to your JOAN admin and click Refresh License Status in JOAN -> Settings -> License to pick up the renewal immediately rather than waiting for the next daily check.
Q: Can I move my license to a new site?A: Yes. On the old site, go to JOAN -> Settings -> License and click Deactivate. This frees up the activation slot on our server. Then install JOAN Premium on the new site and activate using the same email and license key. Your Activations Left counter will reflect the move.
